OPTICS INFOBASE FEATURES
OSA made considerable enhancements to the Optics InfoBase in 2008. In addition to an all-new visual design, we offer the following new features:
Free Personalization Features
Saved Searches. The Saved Search alerts may be tailored based on a variety of fields, including journal name, author, or keyword. Receive customized alerts via e-mail or RSS feeds.Table of Contents Alerts. Register and receive an e-mail alert for complete journal issues.
Personal Library. Similar to a virtual journal, this feature allows you to organize selected articles by topic for easy reference in the future.
Activity Reports. The Activity Reports records your downloads on the Optics InfoBase website.
Subscription Status. Subscription Status records which publications you have subscribed to and when you subscriptions expire.
Search and Navigation
Dynamic table of contents. The online journal tables of contents can now be sorted by topic or by page number. The table of contents can also be filtered to view articles for just one topic at a time.Cross-journal table of contents. One of our newest features is a consolidated thematic table of contents for all recent OSA journal articles. Look for additional enhancements in 2009.
Enhanced conference navigation. Now researchers can browse through OSA Conference Papers by year and session name.
Faceted search results. Search results are now organized by topical OCIS category and journal. Users can click on the organization criteria (the "facets") to filter their search results.
Breadcrumb navigation. All Optics InfoBase and online journal pages now have breadcrumb navigation to orient readers and provide quick access to other locations of the site.
Author search. Researchers can quickly lookup all papers published by a particular author in the Optics InfoBase simply by clicking on an author name from the abstract page.
Simple search, fielded search, quick lookup. A new search interface appears on every online journal page for quick access to simple, advanced, and other types of searches. Searches may be run for specific titles, across titles, and even external to the Optics InfoBase.
External search, federated search. OSA has formal partnerships with Google Scholar, Scitopia, CrossRef, Thomson Reuters, and others. The Optics InfoBase has options for search of full text through Google Scholar and cross-publisher search through Scitopia.
Revealing Usage and Related Content
Top-downloaded articles. Our InfoBase reader survey shows that people value information about how others are using OSA journal content. Most popular is lists of top-downloaded articles, which we now display on each online journal page for the previous month.Forward reference linking. OSA has added external forward citation links to show which articles across publishers cite the article being viewed. Forward citation linking is available for all OSA journals going back to 1917.
Related journal and proceedings articles. Now each abstract page displays related OSA content arranged by source journal as well as topic.
Social bookmarking, E-mail a colleague. Web 2.0 has been called the social web because it is characterized by tools that allow readers to add, annotate, and share content. The Optics InfoBase now has convenient ways for readers to export article records to popular social bookmarking websites; many of these websites have tools for discussion, rating, and similar tasks. We also provide a new "e-mail to a colleague" feature.
Tabbed display of content. To accommodate all these new functionalities, Optics InfoBase underwent a thorough redesign. We hope the new tabbed layout of abstract pages is easy to navigate, and allows you clearly find and use features you value most.
