Abstract
Infrared filters are normally fabricated using precise vacuum evaporation techniques or specialized coating procedures. The resulting filters demand careful handling. Narrow absorption band infrared filters were formed utilizing powdered mineral materials on polyethylene substrates. Various minerals caused specific infrared absorptions in the 9.0 to 11.8 μ region. These absorptions were chosen as desired for applications where narrow absorption band filters were required at specific wavelengths. Several minerals were investigated. Filters were achieved with nearly complete absorption at a specific wavelength, having spectral half-widths of as little as 0.3 μ. The filters were easily prepared, and very reliable.
