Abstract

Several new associated Legendre polynomial relationships for more efficient evaluation of Pendleton’s generalized Mie scattering solution are developed and implemented to investigate new optical geometries for the particle sizing interferometer. Nearly monotonic relationships between particle size and signal visibility and between particle size and scatter intensity are predicted for a particle index of refraction 1.33–i0.0 and 50° off-axis light collection with a 1.0 effective f/No. receiving lens. However, when an imaginary refractive index of 0.1 was added to determine the effects of strong absorption, scatter intensity for the 50° configuration showed large oscillations in the small particle size range, although visibility still showed a nearly monotonic particle size relationship.
