Abstract
The transmission of the birefringent filter is derived, and it is shown that the addition of a second rotating Polaroid to the conventional birefringent filter enables one to calibrate the birefringent photometer using a continuous source. The introduction of the second rotating Polaroid allows one to measure separately the line emission and the continuum in a spectral region where a single line is superimposed on a continuous background.
