Abstract

A scheme for expanding the channel count of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor system is proposed. The scheme uses gratings with an inscribed carrier frequency and is completely compatible with existing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and time-division multiplexing (TDM) architectures. Experimental simulations based on the model presented show the successful extension of an eight-channel WDM architecture to a 7WDM-by-8Harmonic-Domain architecture, having a flat error profile of ~2.9 µ\epsilon at a sampling rate of 20 kHz and an update rate of 1.3 Hz.
