Geometrical Relationships Between the Original Object and the Two Images of a Hologram Reconstruction

Abstract

An analytical treatment shows that for the general case of a hologram formed with a homocentric reference wave and re-illuminated with a second homocentric wave, two images of the original scene are formed. A degenerate case in which only one image is obtained is also mentioned. The geometrical relationships existing between the original scene and the reconstructed images are discussed for both the concentric reference-illumination case and the limiting plane-wave case. A graphical method is presented which aids in the determination of the shape and location of the second image.
