A general theoretical treatment of intensity perturbations due to centrifugal distortion is given for the vibration–rotation lines of asymmetric-rotor molecules. The present theory gives the intensity perturbations up to the second order. By use of empirical constants, the theory is applied to the ν2 band of H2O and good agreement is obtained with experimental results of various authors.
