Deflection of a CO2-Laser Beam in an Absorbing Gas

Abstract

We have investigated, theoretically and experimentally, the effects of thermal focusing on a CO2-laser beam being deflected through an absorbing gas. Quantitative data are presented for beam deflections and peak intensities as a function of angular velocity and absorption coefficient. These data agree, to within a factor of 2, with eikonal-theory predictions.
