The spectrum of Rb iii has been observed in a sliding-spark discharge with the NBS 10.7-m normal-incidence vacuum spectrograph, and in an electrodeless discharge in a magnetic field with the NBS 10.7-m Eagle spectrograph in air. The analysis has yielded most of the levels of the 4p44d, 4p45s, and 4p45p configurations. The 4p45p levels and the 4s24p44d+4s24p45s+4s4p6 group of levels have been theoretically interpreted, with configuration interaction included. The energy parameters determined from a least-squares fit to the observed level values are compared with Hartree–Fock calculations. The ionization energy is estimated to be 39.0±0.3 eV.

Table II
Classified lines of Rb iii between 2300 and 3600 Å. Wavelengths are in air. Intensities are visual estimates of photographic blackening. Where no intensity is given, the line did not appear in the no-field exposure. The levels given for the line classifications are all based on the 4p4 core. The 4p45p levels are designated in J1l coupling. Zeeman components are given as displacements from the center of the pattern in Lorentz units multiplied by 1000. Assumed J and g values are enclosed in square brackets. Symbols: s—shaded to shorter wavelengths; l—shaded to longer wavelengths; c—complex; d—double. Zeeman types: 4—shaded out, J1>J2, g1<g2; 5— shaded in, J1>J2, g1>g2; 6—symmetric, J1 = J2, g1≠g2; 7—unshaded triplet; u—unresolved pattern; i—irregular pattern.

Table III
Energy levels of Rb iii. J values indicated by asterisk are uncertain.
Level established originally by Tomboulian (Ref. 1).
This absolute uncertainty applies to all following level values; relative values of levels given to 0.01 cm−1 have an uncertainty of ±0.1 cm−1.
Mean error of least-squares level fit—4p4(4d+5s)+4s4p6:332 cm−1
4p45p
:109
Fixed at scaled HF value.
Values in parentheses are the ratio of the calculated Rk to a value of Rk calculated by using the absolute value of each wave function.
Fixed at HF ratio to R1(4p4p4s4d).
Fixed at HF ratio to R1(4p5s,4p4d).
Table V
Calculated energy-level values in cm−1, g values, and percentage compositions for the 4s4p6, 4s24p44d, and 4s24p45s configurations of Rb iii. The states of 4s24p45s are denoted by an asterisk. Negative eigenvector components are preceded by a minus sign.
