Abstract

The low-energy level structure of Tb3+ has been derived from spectra obtained with a sliding spark light source. The 7F ground term of the 4f8 configuration was found as well as all levels of the configurations 4f75d, 6s, and 6p built on the 8S7/2 core state of 4f7. Of the possible 51 lines connecting these levels, 48 were observed. Optimized radial parameters are given for the observed configurations. A value for the ionization energy of 39.37(0.10) eV is derived for Tb3+.
