Abstract

A spot size of a Gaussian beam defined on the basis of its intensity is found to be closely related to the equi-intensity curves. Based on this finding, a radial distance which is considered as a generalization of the spot size is defined for a higher-order beam mode with an axially symmetric intensity profile.
