Abstract

In this paper we study the solution of a particular transcendental equation that yields results of the focal shift in truncated and focused Gaussian laser beams. It is found that when the beam is weakly focused, the focal shift is an oscillatory function of the Fresnel numbers, the amplitude of the oscillations increases with the decreasing values of the Fresnel numbers, and, finally, rapid transitions appear as the oscillatory function converges to the limit predicted by the familiar theory of the focusing of a nontruncated Gaussian laser beam.
