Abstract

Absorption by a large sphere is calculated by using an asymptotic expression of the Mie theory. The expression derived includes coherence effects of the internal refracted wave and is not restricted to a small value of the imaginary part of the refractive index. The range of validity of previously suggested approximations is discussed.
