Abstract

A side-tunnel optical fiber is approximated by a rectangular-core waveguide, the polarization characteristics of which can be obtained by a simple perturbation analysis. It is shown that birefringence properties of a side-tunnel fiber match well those of the corresponding rectangular-core waveguide.
