Abstract
A theory of pulse propagation in a diffuse medium recently developed by Ishimaru [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 68, 1045 (1978)] predicts that the effective velocity of the diffuse light in a random distribution of scatterers is
of the light velocity in the homogeneous medium surrounding the scatterers. We present an experimental study of this reduced effective velocity of diffuse light using a picosecond Kerr-effect ultrafast shutter. The results show that the slowing rate is close to the theoretically predicted value of
