Abstract

A simple technique is used to measure the wavelength dependence of the birefringence in highly bireringent fibers. In stress-induced fibers, the stress and shape birefringences reinforce each other, whereas in elliptical-core fibers the stress and shape birefringences can either reinforce each other or partially cancel, depending on the wavelength.
