Abstract

Spectroscopic, quantum electronic and laser characteristics of chromium-doped forsterite (Cr:Mg2SiO4) are presented. Spectroscopic data suggest that the lasing center in chromium-doped forsterite is tetravalent chromium ion (Cr4+), not the common trivalent chromium (Cr3+).
