Abstract
Employing digital holographic imaging techniques, pathophysiology of several red blood cell (RBC) related diseases including malaria and sickle cell disease has been quantitative investigated. 3-D refractive index tomogram of individual RBCs provides structural and chemical properties of RBCs such as hemoglobin (Hb) concentration. Measuring dynamic 2-D phase images of RBCs enables us to retrieve mechanical properties of cell membrane cortex. Holographic measurements offer to possibility of studying underlying mechanisms of several RBC related diseases.
