Abstract
We contrast both direct and indirect methods for subwavelength diffractive design. Direct methods seek to optimize the diffractive structure directly by modifying its parametric representation. However, each modification requires a complete rigorous analysis. In contrast, indirect methods optimize the complex-wave amplitude, which must then be encoded into a diffractive structure.
