Effects of multiple scattering on flow velocity profiles measured using DOCT

Abstract

Experiments are presented in which the flow velocity of a non-Newtonian fluid (blood) are obtained using Doppler OCT. Specific attention is given to the effects of multiple scatter on the results by comparing measurements made on a blood-perfused capillary immersed in pure water with measurements made on the same capillary but immersed in Intralipid® solution. We find that artefacts in the measured flow profile, in particular a systematic deviation from the known, parabolic profile, occur when the optical depth of the capillary reaches about 2.5 scattering mean free paths.
