Abstract
We discuss the disadvantages of using Zernike circle polynomials for analyzing non-circular wavefronts, such as ocular wavefronts over elliptical pupils or annular wavefronts in astronomical telescopes. Numerical examples are considered to illustrate use of the orthonormal polynomials for noncircular pupils such as hexagonal, annular, elliptical, and square.
