Abstract
Purpose: We investigate the design and fabrication of ultra-light weight projection lenses for color wearable displays.
Methods: Driven by field of view requirements from 40 degree to 90 degrees, plastic, glass, and diffractive optics are combined to yield <10g per eye. The approach centers on the use of projection optics instead of eyepiece optics to yield most compact and high image quality designs.
Results: We completed the design and fabrication of an 8g, 52 degree lens. The polychromatic MTF holds well over the entire field of view with a 20% modulation at 55cycles/mm or equivalently 1.8 arcmin resolution over a 3 mm pupil size. Over a 12 mm pupil size the polychromatic MTF still holds well over the entire field of view reaching 10% modulation at 38cycles/arcmin. The implementation of the fabricated 52 degrees lens in a teleportal head-mounted display and remote collaborative environment will be demonstrated. We shall also present design results for a 70degrees design.
Conclusion: Projection optics offers unique solutions for compact light-weight designs for wearable displays. Furthermore, it offers the unique capability to scale field of view to large angles in the order of 70 degrees without cubic scaling of the weight of the optics as a consequence.
