Ultrafast switching of light into surface plasmons: an active grating coupler

Abstract

Near-infrared pump/visible probe measurements on gold gratings demonstrate picosec-ond control of grating assisted coupling to surface plasmon polaritons. On-off switching ratios as large as 5.3 dB are possible.
