Polarization-mode dispersion monitoring by the use of self-phase modulation in a fiber

Abstract

A PMD monitoring method using a nonlinear fiber and an optical filter is proposed. Strong correlation between the monitor signal and the PMD-induced pulse distortion is experimentally and numerically demonstrated.
