Abstract
Volumetric optical storage media have great potential to fulfill future demands for high-capacity data storage.1,2 One example of volumetric media3 can be conveniently molded into homogeneous three-dimensional disks at a low cost. However, a problem arises: conventional optical data storage devices require a closed-loop servo system to keep the laser spot sufficiently locked onto the data track being read or written to, in order to compensate for errors in the laser spot position.4 This servo requires some preexisting reference track or features to follow, which is not present in unwritten homogeneous volumetric media. The current approach to solve this problem involves open-loop writing with high-quality mechanics.5 Therefore, tightly spaced tracks are difficult to write and read reliably, and it is difficult to achieve interchangeability between devices.
