Observation of a cascade effect for optical-fiber splices

Abstract

The loss of a multimode optical-fiber splice is sensitive to the modal power distribution in the input fiber immediately preceding it. Furthermore, the splice itself can cause a redistribution of modal power resulting, in general, in an increase in the fractional power contained in higher-order modes. These observations suggest that the loss of the second splice in a series could be different, and probably greater, from the results obtained if the same splice were measured under steady- state conditions.
