Abstract
Since the first report of a doped single-mode fiber laser,1 there has been an increasing volume of reports of silica fiber lasers and amplifiers with exceptional performance. More recently a Nd3+-doped fluorozirconate multimode fiber laser has been demonstrated at 1.05 µm.2 However, the goal of obtaining a laser/amplifier in the important telecommunications channel at 1.3 µm has remained elusive, with the only prior report of a glass fiber laser being at 1.4 µm.3 We have achieved lasing in the 1.33-1.34-µm range using a Nd3+-doped fluorozirconate multimode fiber.
