Abstract

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is a 192 beam, 1.8 megajoule laser currently under construction at LLNL. The laser requires approximately 7,500 meter- class optical components, each with a 40 cm square aperture. Since 1995, new technologies have been developed and precision-optics manufacturing facilities have been established in cooperation with a variety of US companies. The results of the efforts to date will be described.
