Abstract
The mechanical reliability of optical glass fibers is one of the major areas requiring evaluation before their possible use in telecommunication applications. The fibers must have sufficient tensile strength to withstand the shortterm application of stresses during both fiber manufacture and in field installation. In addition, the fibers must not exhibit static fatigue in the presence of long term residual stresses resulting from assembly of the optical cable or its field installation.
