Self-Organizing Cavity Laser Diode Subject to Temporary External Injection

Abstract

We report on the behaviors of a self-organizing laser diode subject to optical injection. The laser is based on a 1585 nm diffraction limited laser diode mounted in an extended cavity closed by a distant plane mirror and inside which a CdTe photorefractive crystal is inserted. Its oscillating wavelength has been set by injecting light from a master laser. Once the injection is stopped, we have observed a dynamic memory effect: the photorefractive grating maintains the oscillation on the selected wavelength while the oscillating wavelength prevents the decay of this grating. As an application, we have studied a tunable laser diode source whose wavelength is optically addressed using a temporary external injection from a tunable master laser.
