Abstract
A practical method for characterizing microstructure fiber lenses in the near field is described. By detecting the optical power of the light reflected by a mirror and coupled back into the single-mode fiber, one can accurately determine the focal point and the working distance of a fiber lens. The approach is relatively simple and easy to implement. The accuracy in determining the focal point and working distance is better than 2%.
