Abstract
Muscle hypoxia and fatigue are related to the generation of lactic acid in hypoxic regions of the muscle which may limit exercise capability. While generally thought that such regions are homogeneously extended over the muscle mass and activated by exercise, our recent results with a very simple muscle function imager show, to the contrary, that exercise limitation may involve specific rather than generalized portions of the muscle. Thus a simple, noninvasive optical device which is portable and efficacious, could be used to increase understanding of the contribution of particular muscles during different exercises. This could open new possibilities for the evaluation of muscle performance and fatigue of normal and pathological states.
