Approximate Scalar Equations for Polarized Radiative Transfer

Abstract

An asymptotic analysis of the radiative transfer equation with polarization gives a renormalized scalar equation for the Stokes parameter I and quadrature results for Q, U, V. The only change in the approximate transfer equation for I is the scattering phase function has expansion coefficients that depend on three elements of the scattering phase matrix rather than one. The approximate equations enable estimation, with purely scalar equations, of the propagation in optically thick media of the four polarized radiation components.
