Abstract
We present both experimental measurements and Monte Carlo based simulations of the diffusely backscattered intensity patterns which arise from illuminating a turbid medium with a polarized laser beam. A new numerical method that allows us to calculate all 16 elements of the two-dimensional Mueller matrix is used. It is shown that only seven of these matrix elements are independent. To validate our method we have compared simulations to measurements from a turbid medium which consisted of 2.02µm - diameter polysterene spheres in deionized water. Two-dimensional images corresponding to each element of the diffusely backscattering Mueller matrix were obtained. The experimental and numerical results are in good agreement.
