Abstract

We present the experimental realization of a compact and fully automized volume holographic memory based on phase-coded multiplexing that is capable of both, high-resolution analog image and digital data storage, having a storage capacity of up to 480 data pages in a single interaction region of a photorefractive LiNbO3 crystal. The system architecture, its implementation, and its performance are described, with emphasize on the realization of digital data storage. Moreover, the possibility of data encryption using a supplementary random phase modulation of the reference beam is investigated.
