We have shown that the spectral ranges of Yb3+ emission and Nd3+ emission can overlap around 1 µm in phosphate apatite crystals with large lattive parameters. The Yb:Ba5(PO4)3F and Nd:Ba5(PC4)3 Cl laser of good optical quality have been grown and spectroscopically characterized. The wavelength of the 4F3/2→4I11/2 Nd3+ laser emission in Ba5(PO4)3Cl was shown to be shorter than that of 2F5/2→2F7/2 emission in YbBa5(PO4)3F. This implies the possibility of the overlap of Nd and Yb emission lines in mixed apatite crystals. The cw 1053.8 nm laser emission with the slope efficiency equal to 25% has been demonstrated in Nd:Ba5(PO4)3Cl.
