Abstract
Passive mode locking and saturable absorber Q switching of neodymium lasers at 1.3 μm with PbS-quantum dots-doped silicate glasses is demonstrated. Q-switched pulses of 60 ns minimum (0.2 μJ) duration (energy) and average output power of 1 mW from a quasi-cw diode-pumped Nd3+:KGd(WO4)2 laser and ultrashort pulses of 180 ìJ in energy and 200 ps in duration from a Nd3+:YAlO3 laser were obtained. The bleaching relaxation time was measured to be 40 - 70 ps dependent on dot size. Absorption saturation measurements at 1.34 μm of these glasses were carried out. The saturation intensities and the ratios of the excited state absorption to the ground state absorption cross sections were estimated to be 11-20 MW/cm2 and ~0.5, respectively.
