Quest of athermal solid state laser: case of Yb:CaGdAlO4

Abstract

Yb:CALGO is a very promising crystal because of its broad emission spectrum and good thermal conductivity. Those properties enable us to demonstrate a laser with a quantum defect of 0.8%, the lowest ever measured.
