Abstract

Record short wavelength F2 laser light was applied for the first time to rapidly form strong (>20 dB) long-period gratings in hydrogen-free and hydrogen-loaded telecommunication fiber. In hydrogen-loaded fiber, 157-nm grating formation was 250-fold faster than with 248-nm KrF laser radiation.
