In vivo spectroscopy of the calcaneous: a first step towards optical diagnosis of osteoporosis?

Abstract

A system for time-resolved reflectance and transmittance spectroscopy was used for the optical characterization of the human calcaneous in vivo from 600 to 1000 nm on 3 volunteers. Measurement of the absorption spectrum of dehydrated and denatured bone permitted evaluation of the in vivo spectrum in terms not only of water, lipids, oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin, but also of the bone mineral component. A decrease of the mineral content upon increasing age was found from the analysis of the absorption spectra of the volunteers, suggesting a possible use of optical biopsy for the diagnosis of osteoporosis.
