A Marker of Accumulation of Elastin Cross-links in Facial Skin Based on Blue Fluorescence Imaging

Abstract

Blue-excited fluorescence imaging is used to study solar elastosis (collagen and elastin cross-linking) in relation to aging. African American and Caucasian females of different age groups have been imaged during the winter and the summer seasons. By quantifying the green fluorescence signal in the blue-excited fluorescence images, we may estimate the degree of solar elastosis. We find that the blue fluorescence increases with age for both age groups. This trend correlates well with the accumulation of elastotic material in skin due to natural aging as well as photoaging.
