Abstract

Annually, 2-3 millions non-melanoma and around 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally and unfortunately these numbers are increasing, according to the World Health Organization. Surgical resection is only effective for initial lesions, and its recurrence can vary from 7 to 51%. Patient prognosis is highly dependent on early diagnosis, due its metastatic potential, and poor response to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. In Brazil, approximately 8,000 lesions are diagnosed per year, and melanoma is responsible for 80-85% of all deaths caused by skin cancer.
