Effect of Thermal Expansion on Speckle Correlation From Surface Scattering of a Transparent Dielectric Slab

Abstract

Speckle correlation spectroscopy is a sensitive method for investigating local microscopic properties of random systems. Very small changes in local configuration of the scatterers yield different speckle patterns and decrease in the correlation function between respective patterns. Although speckle patterns from rough surfaces have been used for diagnosis of surface roughness [i, ii, iiiiv, v], thermal expansion of solids has not been studied by these methods. We use speckle correlation for studying the thermal expansion of a parallel slab of glass in which one surface is finely ground, and use it to measure the thermal expansion coefficient of the glass.
