A birefringent phase-matching scheme for difference frequency generation in a slotted air-clad waveguide with tunable gap width is proposed and theoretically analyzed. Tunability of 300 cm<sup>-1</sup>and efficiency of 200 W<sup>-1</sup>cm<sup>-2</sup>is predicted.
