Abstract

We investigate gain-guided transverse-grating waveguides with large modal area for optical lasers/amplifiers. We show that surface modes could sustain higher modal gain than the fundamental core mode, which hinders the single mode propagation of gain guiding. We propose a scheme to remove such surface modes.
