A sol gel process was used to produce Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> powders doped with varying amounts of Yb<sup>3+</sup> and Nd<sup>3+</sup> ions. The materials were spectrally characterized to study the energy transfer between the dopant ions.
