By modulating the fluorescence brightness of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect centers in nanodiamonds, we demonstrate a `deterministic emitter switch microscopy' (DESM) technique that enables super-resolution imaging with localization down to 47 nm across a 4x4 μm<sup>2</sup> area.
