Abstract

The photochromic effect, bleaching effect and no-sensitization effect are observed in four doubly doped LiNbO3 crystals of the same doping system of Fe:Mn, Ce:Mn, Ce:Cu and Fe:Cu. A two-step and a three-step recording/fixing schemes are proposed to record nonvolatile photorefractive holographic gratings for these different effects. The basic idea is to use two red laser beams and an ultraviolet illumination selectively for the writing of charge grating in shallower centers, the developing of charge grating in deeper centers by transferring the grating in shallower centers and the fixing of only the grating in deeper centers for nonvolatile read-out. The experimental results and a corresponding comparison are given.
