Abstract
The evolution of a diffractive optical element (DOE) from a stand-alone component into an integral part of a micro-optical system can be a significant challenge. Design, fabrication, assembly, environmental and packaging constraints of micro-optical systems should be intimately coupled – this is the definition of an integrated system. Coherent consideration of these factors can increase the utility of a micro-optical system. On the other hand, inattention to these integration issues will compromise a DOE’s performance. While DOEs and the micro-optical systems that incorporate DOEs can be complex, the decrease in optical source and detector dimensions that parallels Moore’s Law in the electronic world makes integrated micro-optical systems an inevitability.
