Abstract (40-Word Limit): We report on a numerical and experimental study of a multimode EDFA suitable for mode division multiplexing. This EDFA is designed to equally amplify LP11 and LP21 modes with a gain close to 20 dB, which is confirmed by experimental and numerical results. This behavior is obtained by tailoring the erbium spatial distribution within the fiber core.
